The play Peter Pan, or The Boy who Wouldn't Grow Up premiered in 1904 and preceded the novel Peter and Wendy, which was first published in 1911. In the play, Tinker Bell has taken poison to prevent Peter from drinking it. She is near death, but she tells Peter that she could be saved if children believed in fairies. Peter turns to the audience and begs those who believe in fairies to clap their hands.
